To assess and verify NVQs candidates must be working to the standards of the relevent Assessor and Verifier units. These awards are:
- A1 : Assess candidates using a range of methods
- A2 : Assess candidates' performance through observation
- V1 : Conduct internal quality assurance of the assessment process
- V2 : Conduct external quality assurance of the assessment process

Most new Assessors will undertake A1, although if the assessor is only going to be undertaking observation they may just complete A2. Successful A1 candidates do not need to complete A2 as well. Anyone undertaking the assessor awards must successfully complete their qualification within 18 months of commencing their role, as stipulated by the NVQ Code of Practice.
Internal Verifiers need to complete the V1 award. Anyone undertaking V1 must successfully complete their qualification within 18 months of commencing their role.
Further guidance on Assessing and Internally verifiying is available both in the NVQ Code of Practice and HAB's Quality Assurance Manual. Both documents have to be adhered to.
External Verifier's, who monitor centres performance to HAB's NVQ requirements, have to achieve V2.
